Leonardo Barreto
Leonardo Barreto is an economist with research interests in macroeconomics, international economics, and monetary economics. His research combines empirical evidence, theory, and quantitative methods to understand the mechanisms driving debt crises and recessions in open-economy environments, and takes a normative approach to evaluating alternative macroeconomic policies.
His prior work has studied the welfare consequences of debt-financed fiscal stimulus across the household wealth distribution, the role of official lending in the resolution of sovereign defaults, and how global financial conditions transmit to emerging economies. His research has been published in the Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control.
Leonardo received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Minnesota, and previously taught macroeconomics, monetary policy, and international finance at the University of Minnesota, Universidad de los Andes, and Universidad del Rosario.
